Teeing up for a debate on golf handicaps
GYMPIE Vets appear to be paying the price for the reduced handicaps many achieved while playing under the compulsory tee-up rule introduced to preserve the fairways during the recent dry spell.
Only three players managed to break 70 in last Tuesday's Bridgestone Matchplay qualifying round at the Gympie Pines course.
Debate about the poor scoring was a hot topic after the game but the consensus from several senior players was that golf is a much easier game when players are allowed to tee up on the fairways.
Gympie Vets President Bryan Stallard agrees.
"Compulsory tee up allowed many of the shorter hitting players to use their drivers on the fairways which meant they could get more distance," said Stallard.
"Hitting off the deck is a much tougher proposition and I think many members are having trouble playing to the handicaps achieved under the compulsory tee-up rule."
Tuesday's competition was a single stroke event to decide the qualifiers for the Bridgestone Matchplay Championships.
Lindsay B. Taylor emerged as one of the A-grade favourites after carding a respectable 70 nett beating Don Cappetti and Col Smith on a count back.
Graeme Major is looking good in B-grade after shooting a nett 69 to edge out Lionel Muir on a count back with Bill Swan third.
The irrepressible Perry Pyke was too good in C-grade with another nett 69, one stroke clear of Vince Andrews while John Kenny came in third with 71.
