Taxi driver stabbed to death

A TAXI driver has been stabbed to death and the culprit killed just seconds later in a shocking series of events in Melbourne this morning.

About 3am police were called to an address in Mount Waverly where they found a male taxi driver dead at the scene.

Just down the road, another man had been killed in a car crash.

Police soon discovered the man in the crash had killed the driver and taken off in the taxi but lost control soon after and crashed into a pole.

Speaking to reporters in Melbourne today, Homicide Detective David Snare described what had taken place as a "tragic set of circumstances".

He said the taxi driver had simply "been going about his lawful business" when he was attacked.

Investigations are continuing.
