Taxes, levies push up rubbish costs

FEDERAL carbon taxes and state waste levies will raise the cost of disposing of rubbish by up to $90 a tonne on the Fraser Coast.

A $35 a tonne levy introduced by the State Government will apply on commercial, industrial, construction and demolition waste from December 1.

Councils would also have to pay the Federal Government's carbon tax from July 1, 2012.

The council would have to pay the carbon tax to offset the methane and carbon dioxide gas produced at its landfills. It has been estimated that for every tonne of household rubbish collected from the roadside, the council would have to pay for 900kg of carbon equivalent emissions.

The cost of the carbon tax and the waste levy would have to be included on fees and charges when they were calculated next year.
