Syringe-wielding offender tried to take car with baby in it

A POLICE chase ended with a taser in Duaringa on Sunday, after a Rockhampton man stole a car in Emerald.

Blackwater Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Sergeant Alan Baker said the man was arrested and charged with multiple offences after he threatened multiple people with a syringe and attempted to steal a car with a baby in it.

"At about 2.30pm the offender stole a vehicle in Springsure and drove dangerously at speeds of up to 180kmh to avoid police, the offender crossed to the wrong side of the road on numerous occasions causing police to abort any attempt to intercept," Det Sgt Baker said.

"The offender drove to Emerald where he attempted to steal another vehicle that had baby in the vehicle, a female managed to remove the baby from the vehicle as the offender attempted to start the vehicle, the offender was unable to operate the vehicle at which time he approached another male washing his vehicle in the bay at the Emerald car wash.

"The offender produced a syringe, threatened the owner and stole his vehicle."   But that was just the start of the offending, with the driver continuing at high speed through Blackwater, Bluff and Dingo where he continued to cross double white lines, on blind corners, at speeds of up to 190kmh.

At interception site was set up on the Capricorn Hwy west of Duaringa, where Det Sgt Baker said a "stinger" tyre deflation device was used.

"The offender, in an attempt to avoid the deflation device has swerved, struck a guardrail and come to a stop with all tyres deflated," Det Sgt Baker said.

"The offender produced a syringe and threatened police at which time a taser was deployed and he was taken into custody."

The stolen car, a Toyota Hilux, was "extensively damaged".

He was charged with a range of offences including armed robbery, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evade police and breaching bail conditions.

"The offender put numerous lives at risk on the highway yesterday," Det Sgt Baker said.

Det Sgt Baker said any person who witnessed the dangerous driving between Blackwater and Duaringa is urged to contact the Blackwater CIB.
