Suzuka win puts Rosberg firmly in control

MOTORSPORT: Nico Rosberg has strengthened his grip on the Formula 1 drivers' championship after his win in the Japanese Grand Prix.

The German extended his lead over Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton to 33 points with only 100 still available in the remaining four races.

After an engine failure cost him a chance to retake the lead in Malaysia the previous weekend, at Suzuka it was a poor start that contributed to Hamilton finishing third, behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

"The whole weekend felt great from the world 'go', and it's been very special - especially on this legendary track,” Rosberg said.

The result means Mercedes wins the constructors' championship for the third consecutive year.

"I fought hard at the end and did everything I could. It doesn't really matter now, we'll move forwards,” Hamilton said.

"I don't think the damp patch (at the start) had really anything to do with it. I made a mistake. Then working my way up from there was tricky, but I did the best I could.

"Nico did a great job so congrats to him.”
