Suspected car thief 'sets fire to himself'

A MAN was treated for burns and taken to hospital after allegedly trying to torch a car he had allegedly stolen.

Police said the car was stolen from Raceview on Wednesday night and driven to Bundamba where it was set on fire.

A police spokeswoman said the case came to light after Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics were called to a house on Blackall St Basin Pocket where a man was suffering burns.

He was treated there and taken to Ipswich Hospital, the spokeswoman said.

A burnt out car was found on Brisbane Rd, Bundamba near Bergins Hill Rd and traced to the injured man.

The spokeswoman said between 2am and 2.30am yesterday fuel was used to burn a station wagon at Bundamba. Police scenes of crime officers were called in and a suspect was found.

The spokeswoman said yesterday morning a 21-year-old man from Basin Pocket was being questioned by police. Yesterday afternoon, no charges had been laid and investigations were continuing.
