Supermarket giant set to start building latest store
SUPERMARKET giant Coles is expected to begin work soon on its newest store in Toowoomba after amended development plans were approved.
The Toowoomba Regional Council gave the green light to new plans last week for the Coles-Liquorland centre at Glenvale, which is expected to create 300 jobs during and after construction.
It will now be built over three stages according to the new application, to allow gradual expansion of the supermarket.
The plans also featured minor adjustments to signage heights and the general position of the proposed building on the intersection of Glenvale and Greenwattle Sts, to "reflect Coles' latest national design standards, and improve site efficiency/functioning".
Coles first submitted the plans to the council in 2015, which was reported by The Chronicle at the time.
A spokeswoman for Coles said the company was close to finalising its construction timeline.
"Glenvale is a thriving community and we are pleased to have received approval to bring a brand new Coles supermarket to local residents," she said.

"Construction of the development is expected to create around 200 jobs and once completed, Coles will welcome around 100 team members to work at the new supermarket.
"We are currently in the process of confirming a timeframe for the development."
The new supermarket, which will be Coles' seventh in the Toowoomba region, is expected to try and break Woolworths' dominance in the west Toowoomba area.
There is currently no supermarket in Glenvale, a suburb experiencing massive development booms as a result of upcoming residential estates.
Woolworths at Clifford Gardens or Drayton are the nearest stores for Glenvale shoppers.
