Sorovi hoping to inspire next wave

HALFBACK Moses Sorovi can proudly wear his Reds' Indigenous Round jersey as a symbol to inspire two Queensland schoolboys to reach for the same heights.

The production line of indigenous talent into Super Rugby has hovered between a trickle and non-existent for too long which is why nurturing the next wave is so important.

While Sorovi is training for Friday night's clash against the Sunwolves at Suncorp Stadium, two fleet-footed teens will be flying the flag in Sydney.

Winger Jangala Bennett (Nudgee College) and fullback Shaquille McLeod (Marist College Ashgrove) are already try-scorers for Queensland Schoolboys at the national carnival in Sydney.

Both crossed in the 67-12 thrashing of Western Australia last Sunday and will face Combined States on Tuesday.

"There are lots of indigenous talents out there who just need the opportunities," said Sorovi, who never played rugby until he attended St Peters Lutheran College from tiny Yam Island.

"Credit to who designed this jersey, it's one of the best, and it is pretty special to represent in Indigenous Round because it means a lot to other communities and families as well."

Designer Samantha Booth, a Butchulla woman, said the jersey represented all roads leading to home.

The Reds Future Indigenous Leaders Program is an award-winning scheme that has encouraged greater attendance at participating schools and education gains.

"The program is outstanding and I can see how my three children are benefiting from being part of it for their futures," Booth said.

Sunwolves winger Semisi Masirewa will miss Friday night's game after copping a three-week suspension for his lifting tackle against the NSW Waratahs last weekend.
