Super Retail Group announces new boss

SUPER Retail Group has announced a new chief executive to replace veteran Peter Birtles at the helm of the operator of the Supercheap Auto, BCF and Rebel chains.

The Lawnton-based retailer told the ASX this morning that Anthony Heraghty, who is managing director of the company's outdoor retailing business, will succeed Mr Birtles as chief executive and managing director from March 31 this year.

Mr Birtles, who has been with the company for 17 years including 12 in the top job, announced his retirement last October.

Super Retail Group chairwoman Sally Pitkin said a comprehensive global executive search had been made for Mr Birtles' replacement.

Ms Pitkin said an experienced executive was needed to meet the challenges of an increasingly competitive and technology driven retail environment.

"The board concluded that Anthony had the best combination of attributes and values to lead the next era of growth for Super Retail Group," said Ms Pitkin. "Anthony is a respected and trusted leader."

Super Retail has been impacted by slowing retail sales and concern about its future after the departure of Mr Birtles. Mr Birtles told shareholders last October that he had "mixed feelings" over his impending departure after more than 17 years with the company but he and the board had ultimately agreed on the decision.

Like other bricks and mortar retailers, the company has faced increasing challenges from online rivals. In 2017, it announced it would rebrand its 65 Amart Sports outlets as Rebel stores in a $34 million refit designed to meet growing threats from global competitors.
