Sunshine Coast Theatre Festival is Coming!

Entries have closed and preparations are well under way for the Sunshine Coast Theatre Festival, an eagerly awaited event for the Sunny Coast’s amateur dramatic community and for the theatre loving public. This year, the highly successful annual Festival will be held at the Buderim War memorial Hall on 16-18 August.

Spokeswoman for the Festival Judy Fredriksen says that the event has been running for over 40 years. “It’s always a pleasure to watch actors, directors, and writers from all over South East Queensland showcase their creative works,” Judy said. “We will have a full programme of performances over the three days of the festival with opportunities for feedback from our adjudicator Michael Bey, and of course, there is an awards ceremony and presentation of prizes on Sunday afternoon.”

The Festival is run entirely by volunteers and visitors can expect a range of entertainment from comedies to dramas. Playwrights will have the opportunity to see their works performed and may springboard on to greater things. Last year’s winner of the Best Unpublished Script award, Jasmine Fairbairn, was overjoyed when her first play, Undertow, was also awarded Best Play, Best Actor, and Best Director. Since then she and her partner have been mentored and encouraged by the judges, Michael and Margery Forde. This has given Jasmine the confidence to pitch her work to Screen Queensland. “The experience of the Festival and the help we’ve received since has been invaluable,” said Jasmine, who has gone on to write another six scripts.

The Sunshine Coast Theatre Festival will kick off at 7pm on Friday August 16th, and will continue all weekend at the Buderim War Memorial Hall, next to Buderim Village Park, which has wonderful views down to the ocean. Visitors should dress warmly for the night sessions. Buderim Quota Ladies will be serving delicious homemade snacks and meals over the weekend. We hope you can join us there!
