LADY Elliot Island was the butt of jokes on Channel 7's Sunrise program this morning.

A segment on the program saw weather reporter Nuala head to the island and speak to local caretaker Peter Gash, who explained how the island was formed.

"It's not a continential or rock island, it's made by all the animals and the creatures that have created this magnificent Great Barrier Reef, this world heritage listed park..." he said.

Holding some of the ground, Mr Gash explained what the island was made up of.

"What you see is the excreta, or the waste product of the coral polyp, it basically is poop."

Mr Gash then spoke about how bird poo also adds to the stack.

When the show crossed back to the studio, the hosts giggled about "poop island", with Natalie suggesting the fact could be used in the marketing.
