Sugar industry welcomes LNP promise

SUGAR industry figures yesterday welcomed an LNP promise to set up a $4.6 million research and development package.

Isis Canegrowers chairman Joe Russo said the promise was "just ideal", given the industry was going into a whole new phase in research and development.

Bundaberg Canegrowers deputy chairman Tony Castro said governments could never spend too much money on research and development.

LNP shadow minister for agriculture Andrew Cripps was in Bundaberg yesterday to meet sugar industry figures and explain the commitment to them.

"It is vitally important we continue to invest in research and development," he said.

Candidate for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the funding would complement the industry's own $21 million annual investment and provide certainty as the industry underwent a major review of its research and development structures.
