Straddie a target for Santa

ANTHONY Freedman will try to add another Group 1 to the stable's haul of five this season when Goodwood winner Santa Ana Lane tackles next month's 1350m Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben.

Freedman said Santa Ana Lane, who won the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes in the spring, would return to his Pinecliff stables at Mount Eliza.

"He'll spend a few days in a paddock and then we'll take him to Flemington and then hopefully get a flight to Brisbane," he said.

Freedman, speaking on RSN927, said he had been confident Santa Ana Lane would fare well in The Goodwood at Morphettville.

"If he had luck in running, he was ready to run a big race. I said to Ben (Melham), if you win, you'll win it late," he said.

Freedman said Doomben might not suit Santa Ana Lane as it was a tight, tricky track compared to Morphettville, but "we'll take our chance".

He said Mr Sneaky, who finished third in the 1350m BRC Sprint at Doomben on Saturday, would also contest the June 9 Stradbroke.

Freedman said he was considering running former Japanese galloper Ambitious, who finished third in the Doomben Cup, in the Brisbane Cup.

He said Doomben didn't really suit the galloper and he got held up and had a chequered passage so he was pleased with his effort.

"He didn't have 2400m form in Japan but I think he's an ideal Caulfield Cup horse."

Patrick Payne intends to take his smart galloper Widgee Turf to Randwick next Saturday for an 1100m race, which will be his final run before the Stradbroke Handicap.

Payne said he is looking for a rain in Sydney and Brisbane as Widgee Turf needs a soft track but he was uncertain to get it.
