Stosur falls at first hurdle

DEFENDING US Open champion Sam Stosur has been bundled out of the Australian Open in a straight-set demolition by Romanian Sorana Cirstea.

The sixth seed never looked comfortable on Rod Laver Arena and Cirstea - ranked 59th in the world - took advantage, upsetting the home favourite 7-6, 6-3 in the first-round.

The early exit caps off a disastrous start to the year for Stosur, who failed to find any form in her matches at the Sydney International and Brisbane International.

Stosur and Cirstea traded breaks of serve early in the match before the 21-year-old Romanian powered her way to win the first set in a tie break (7-2).

In front of a packed crowd, Stosur tried to work her way back into the match, but Cirstea claimed another early break, before claiming a famous victory with one final break of serve.
