Still a King hit

ASK Matt King about State of Origin and he will quickly remind you that he played in the last series that NSW won in 2005.

And while the 31-year-old put his hand up to play again this year he knew it was always going to be a long shot.

The Rabbitohs co-captain was overlooked for Josh Morris and Michael Jennings in the centres.

King scored a try in his last State of Origin game when the Blues won 18-4 in game three at Suncorp Stadium in 2007.

Queensland won the series 2-1 after 10-6 and 25-18 victories earlier in the series.

King named Morris and Wests Tigers centre Chris Lawrence as the likely centre pairing, but admitted he was still keen for the call-up when quizzed by The Northern Star earlier this month.

"If I got the phone call I would be there in a minute," King said.

"Stranger things have happened.

"It's a big thing to be a part of and it's a special time of year for players and supporters.

"I was part of the last NSW team that won a series and it would be great to get back there.

"We had some great talent (2005), but looking at some of what we've got coming through now, a win isn't far off."

While King was away for four years with the Warrington Wolves in the European Super League he never missed watching an Origin game on television.

"It was tough because of the time difference but it was always something to look forward to," he said.
