Stenson caps stellar year with European Tour crown

GOLF: Swede Henrik Stenson has completed an unforgettable year by claiming his second European Tour Race to Dubai title.

A ninth-place finish in the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai was enough to give the world No.4 the title, which goes with his British Open triumph and silver medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Renowned for writing down his goals at the start of each year, when asked what they would be for 2017, the 40-year-old replied: "I can just cut and paste this year.”

Stenson won his first Race to Dubai title in 2013.

Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick, 22, won the DP World Tour Championship by a stroke from Tyrrell Hatton.

"I just did everything really well and putted out of my shoes. It was fantastic all week and I think that's where I gained on the field,” Fitzpatrick said.

Rory McIlroy needed to win the tournament and Stenson to finish outside the top 45 to have any chance of winning the Race to Dubai for a third straight year.

But despite seven birdies and an eagle in a closing 65, the world No.2 could only share ninth place with Stenson.
