Steketee ready to bring the Heat to Brisbane

CRICKET: Mark Steketee and the Brisbane Heat aim to take their game to the next level this Big Bash season.

The Warwick quick was a shining light in the Brisbane Heat bowling attack last season, taking 15 wickets from nine matches, putting him second overall for the tournament.

The team made the semi-finals before going down to the Sydney Sixers in heart-breaking fashion, falling in a super over.

"We're happy with how we went last year," Steketee said.

"Obviously it wasn't the finishing result we wanted, but this year we want to give ourselves a chance in the finals to win a game and the competition.

"All that is irrelevant if we don't start well against the Stars."

The campaign for the Heat kicks off tomorrow night against Melbourne at The Gabba, and despite boasting a batting line-up with Glenn Maxwell, Keven Pietersen, Luke Wright and Rob Quinney, Steketee is confident in the bowlers.

"We know how good their players are," he said.

"But they still have to hit the ball over the rope at the end of the day. If we execute our plans, we'll be fine."

Despite the fact he was one of the tournament's top bowlers for the 2016/17 season, Steketee said he will have to maintain a high level of performance to reach those heights again.

"It gives you a bit of confidence," he said.

"But it's a new year and you have to start well, especially in T20 where the game changes pretty quick.

"I will try and keep things pretty simple. It worked last year and there's no reason it can't work again."
