Staying fit can cost you money
GYMPIE fitness lovers spend about $75 a month on their health regimes, but when it comes to budgeting for this expense many falter at the first hurdle.
A survey out yesterday revealed 21% of central Queenslanders preferred running to other work-outs, while swimming (16%), going to the gym (11%), cycling (5%) and team sports (5%) were high on the list of popular activities.
Suncorp Bank's Cost of Being Fit Report found many residents did some exercise, often spending about $1000 a year on their favourite work-outs.
The bank's central Queensland regional manager Craig Armstrong said 63% of the region's health enthusiasts did not include their physical activity costs in their budgets.
"Planning and budgeting for fitness expenses will not only assist with budget oversights, but it will help people remain committed to their fitness goals," Mr Armstrong said.
"Membership expenses, coupled with sports equipment, running shoes and fitness attire can really add up when not budgeted for correctly."
However, Cooloola Fitness Centre owner-operator Adam Cross said people did not need to spend money to get fit and stay healthy.
He said throughout the Gympie region there were plenty of ways to exercise without paying.
"It's as simple as a run or a ride," Mr Cross said.
"There's no excuse (not to exercise) somewhere like Gympie where there are stairs and hills. There are so many options.
"If you're willing to put in the time and effort, getting there is easy. It's just maintaining it."
The survey region also included Rockhampton, Mac
kay, Bundaberg, Fraser Coast and Gladstone.

Work out how much you can afford to spend and then stick to it.
Take advantage of sales especially as most sporting equipment and sporting apparel lines release new gear every 12 months.
Some health insurance providers give allowances for some fitness-related gear as well as any sports medicine services related to injuries.
