Stats show most asylum seekers deemed 'genuine' refugees

THE vast majority of the more than 7400 asylum-seekers who arrived in Australia by boat in the March quarter were genuine refugees, government figures revealed on Monday.

A quarterly update on irregular maritime arrivals released by the Department of Immigration showed that 7464 asylum-seekers arrived in Australia by boat in the first three months of the year.

While there was a record number of arrivals during the quarter, more than 90% of the arrivals were determined to be genuine refugees.

There were similar rates of approvals in recent quarters, with 82.4% of arrivals determined to be genuine refugees in the December quarter last year and 95.4% in the September quarter, 2012.

The figures come after the government last week passed legislation excising the Australian mainland from the refugee convention, allowing boat arrivals on the mainland to be moved to offshore centre for processing.
