Stags triumph over Swans
IT was a swan song for the Maroochy Coolum Swans on Saturday, when the team went down to the Mary Valley Stags 50-20 in the penultimate round before the finals.
The win continues a positive run for the Stags, after an epic 62-0 smashing of Kawana and convincing 38-12 win over Caboolture in recent weeks.
Stags treasurer Jenny Carlson said while the Swans came out firing, it was Mary Valley that came out on top.
She said the Stags managed to dominate by half-time even though the Swans got in early with some hard hits.
"Quickly the Stags found holes in their defence and went into half-time with a handsome lead," Carlson said.
A tough line of defence in the form of Jason Johnston, Josh Heck, Travis Backhouse and Kaden Dickfos slowed the Swans down and fullback Troy Carlson made for a rock-hard last line defender of the Stags' line.
Quick breaks from Josh Ryan and Brad Carlson helped maintain the Stags' momentum.
Carlson credited Josh Heck with earning the players' player award for what she said was an outstanding game.
The win over the Swans meant the Stags would head into the finals facing Kilcoy.
"This will be a great game, as a win for either team will be the first step towards a grand final birth for both teams," Carlson said.
Before they can turn their focus to the first round of the finals series though, the Stags must take on Beachmere.
The advantage looks to be in the hands of the third-place Stags over seventh-place Beachmere for this weekend's clash.
The Stags play at Yandina on Saturday at 1.30pm.
Mary Valley 50 (B. Warren, B. Carlson, L. Fenton, C. Parker, J. Ryan, T. Backhouse, J. Malcomson 1, J. Heck 2 tries; K. Dickfos 5, J. Woods 2 goals.) def Maroochy Coolum 20.
