Staff attacked at North Queensland youth detention centre

STAFF at Townsville's Cleveland Detention Centre were rushed to hospital after being attacked by youths.

Police said late Thursday they were responding to a disturbance at the detention centre.

They said about 6.45pm 20 to 25 youths were causing a disturbance at the centre on Old Common Rd.

The majority of staff were evacuated with a number receiving minor injuries as a result of being struck by projectiles.

The centre was in lockdown with general duties officers and specialist police responding to the incident.

The injured staff were transported to Townsville Base Hospital.

The Townsville Bulletin reported about 12 boys were rioting on the roof and had metal and wooden rods.

Other media have reported on Friday that some youths are demanding KFC, more footballs, more computer games and marijuana.

A Youth Justice Queensland spokesperson said all of the juveniles involved had been secured.   "The last two young people came down from the roof about 6.25am," the spokesperson said.
