Sports participation funding to get Australians off couch
THE Federal Government will unveil a new way to support participation in organised sports as part of a $134 million funding package that will also focus on supporting high-performance athletes in their charge to Rio.
Health and Sport Minister Sussan Ley has announced more than $22 million will be invested in sports participation in 2015/16 as part of the Federal Government's Play.Sport.Australia strategy.
This includes a new funding model that will, for the first time, allocate funds through a transparent category structure based on a sport's performance in engaging and delivering grassroots participation.
It comes on top of the $100m Sporting Schools participation plan, now taking applications at http://www.sportingschools.gov.au.
Ms Ley also announced almost $100 million would be invested into Australian National Sporting Organisations for high performance in 2015/16, focusing on those sports into the Rio 2016 Olympics, with another $12m to support athletes direct.
"It's essential for the health of Australia that the Government continues to have a balanced approach to investment in sport focused on grassroots participation through to our elite athletes," she said.
