Special Olympics says 'thanks' to flood helpers

A MEDAL and certificate of appreciation were given to volunteers who assisted the evacuation and flood clean-up of the Special Olympic Gympie Clubhouse.

Australian Red Cross representative Gavin Creed remembers getting a call for help late at night to assist in the removal of club equipment.

Volunteers had to act fast as torrential rain flooded the Mary River and floodwater quickly broke her banks.

"The telephone rang at about 10.30pm, just before bedtime, asking if I had a truck available and a driver to remove equipment from the clubhouse," Gavin said.

Another group of volunteers who received praise were the rural fire brigade volunteers who conducted the clean-up and wash-down of the clubhouse.

The Special Olympics clubhouse will purchase some office equipment that couldn't be salvaged and hope to move the rest of the items back in and resume activities soon.

Our region's volunteers working together to assist others in time of emergency is deserving of a medal presentation and thanks from the community.
