Editorial: Special force show of power

Nine police vehicles attended a house in Gympie last night.

I HAVE worked on the front line of news in the Gympie region for more than 15 years now but never have I seen an operation like Tuesday night's.

The Lawrence St "siege" was a mighty show of force by police enforcement in the area.

Specially trained SERT officers dressed like military snipers showed what they can do, extracting a wanted man from the Lawrence St address.

SERT officers arrived in their massive armoured vehicle and after negotiating over a loudhailer for some time, used stun grenades, tear gas and police dogs to bring the man out of the house.

It was a hi-tech operation, one that wouldn't have looked out of place in a Hollywood blockbuster. One thing for sure, you wouldn't want to take on SERT officers. They are a very well-drilled, scary unit.
