Southside garden is blooming great

ATTENTION to detail helped Southside's Brian Herron and Gladys Gear to victory in this year's Gympie Times Garden Competition.

The pair took out the best town garden category for the second year running after judges were impressed by their immaculate garden.

Judging for this year's competition were Noel Ellis, Joy Drummond and Kev Thornley.

Brian and Gladys were overjoyed with their win yesterday.

"I'm so happy to have won again," Gladys said.

The good news helped ease Gladys' discomfort following a trip to the dentist.

"I love the garden and like sharing with others," Gladys said.

"What I enjoy about my garden is the colour, structure of the plants and relaxation."

Gladys and Brian said their garden was a constant work in progress and they enjoyed the process of planning and realising their ambitions.

"I was impressed by the attention to detail and the dedication they have," judge Noel Ellis said.

Gladys was also ecstatic to learn a bus from Childers had been organised to see the garden in June.

The standard of entries across the board was high this year but taking the spotlight was Langshaw couple Kev and Cathy Blanckensee.

The couple won best vegetable garden, best commercial garden at the Gympie Showgrounds (Kev is responsible for those) and best country garden.

Meanwhile, Jones Hill State Primary School lifted the title of best school vegetable garden.

"The school children were very hands on and there was a lot of pride," Noel said.

The competition judge encouraged more schools to enter next year in the best school garden category, this year won by Chatsworth State Primary School.

"There are some great school gardens but the schools need to enter," Noel said.
