Bees told to buzz off with enormous hive given the flick

WHAT started out as a small community of bees under the archway in the backyard of Max and Lesley Gray has become quite a phenomenon.

The Casino couple now have a 500cm x 750cm beehive with 16 layers of wax hanging from the same archway with a few thousand bees in residence.

"It started about seven years ago and was the size of a porridge plate," Max said.

"When it got bigger I called the Department of Agriculture and he asked me if I had a licence for it.

"He told me it would disappear after a couple of years."

Rather than disappear it has now gotten much bigger to the point the archway is in danger of collapsing.

"I've tried to keep the greenery manicured on it but when I got too close I got stung on both sides of the face," Max said.

"I've learnt my lesson."

Despite the painful lesson Max will be sad to see the bees go.

"I have a young fellow, Nathan Greiber, who will come and take them in boxes as if that archway collapses it could be dangerous," he said.

Max is hoping they will go to a good home and his thousands of residents will have left him some honey as a thank you.

OH, HONEY!

According to Guinness World Records, the largest honeycomb in the world was produced by a beehive owned by Argirios Koskos. It weighed 10.4kg

In Bangalore, there is a banyan tree with the world's largest number of beehives. Millions of bees have produced more than 600 hives
