Snooker Freak

AUSTRALIAN snooker star Kurt Brown is scheduled to make his first appearance in Gympie today in the Wide Bay Open Championship.

The snooker competition is the second major event held at the Gympie RSL snooker room this year after a successful Gold City 5000.

Gympie Snooker Club spokesman Cliff Hanson said it was a great opportunity to see one of the best snooker talents going around.

Brown is young in snooker terms at 18, but he is already a rising star in the world snooker ranks.

He has won numerous Queensland and Australian snooker and eight-ball titles.

Hanson said Brown was a special player.

"I played him when he was 16.

"I jumped away to a couple of leads but he soon put a stop to that.

"He is a freak. He is only young but he is sensational to watch."

Hanson said spectators were welcome to come along and get a glimpse of the young star.

"Overseas you pay $100 to watch a player of his calibre," he said.

Hanson said the Brown was the favourite and that the local players would be playing off for second spot.

He said Shaun Budd, who won the Gold City 5000, lost to Brown 4-0 in Maroochydore a couple of weeks ago. "He has talent you have to see to believe."
