Smashed in clash

A 34-6 LOSS to Xavier Catholic College rocked Gympie State High School's Year 8 rugby league team in a schoolboy clash.

The game was part of the Steve Renouf Shield at Jack Stokes Oval.

The local side was only down by two points, thanks to strong defence, at half time but the gap only increased into the second half.

Gympie High's acting coach Dan McGlone, who stood in for Chris Costa, said Gympie didn't see the ball much in the first half but they "hung in there defensively".

The out of towners ran all over the local boys in the second half. He said some silly mistakes and missed tackles contributed to Gympie's demise.

"They went away from the game plan a bit in the second half," he said.

McGlone said Xavier's talents included a quick fullback and a couple of big forwards.

However, Gympie front-rower Mick Grubner and lock Nelson Hands put on a good show.
