Small quake shakes Central Queensland

SHAKE: Latest earthquake felt south west of Calliope
SHAKE: Latest earthquake felt south west of Calliope Brenda Strong

A MINOR earthquake south-west of Calliope on Saturday served as a reminder that there is earthquake activity within the region.

Preliminary reports stated that it was a 2.4 magnitude earthquake recorded at 3.50pm.

Geoscience Australia duty seismologist Emma Matthews said the quake was in a remote area.

As of Sunday afternoon Geoscience Australia had not received any reports of residents feeling the tremor.

Other earthquakes that have occurred near the epicentre of Saturday's have been of a magnitude of 1.5 and 1.4.

She said Australia had more than 200 magnitude two earthquakes every year.

"There have been a couple of little earthquakes out in that area in the past," she said. "It's fairly typical activity in terms of intraplate earthquakes that occur within the tectonic plates."

"As Australia moves northward you get stresses moving up in the crust of Australia and these are released in the form of earthquakes," she said. It was the second quake that affected our region this year.

The first was the Eidsvold quake, which was of a magnitude of 5.2.

She said they had several reports of aftershocks and continued to monitor for further incidents.

"People just need to be aware that there might be further earthquakes.

"These minor earthquakes are occurring randomly, but they might not even be felt," she said.

"It just shows that we're living on an active, dynamic planet in Australia."
