SIDELINED Speaker Peter Slipper spent almost $1000 on Christmas cards, documents obtained under FOI have revealed.

Fairfax newspapers revealed on Monday Mr Slipper also spent $1248 on the robes and ties he made famous during his six months as Speaker of the Parliament before standing down while his former staffer James Ashby pursues him on sexual harassment charges in the Federal Court.

Mr Slipper spent $965 on Christmas cards, more than $18,000 on travel and $8671 on catering.

His total office expenses for the six months was $30,280.

The successful FOI claim came as Federal Attorney-General Nicola Roxon considers placing parliament outside the reach of the such requests.
