Slingsby sailing into golden waters

TOM Slingsby is plotting a course to win the men's Laser gold medal in the sailing regatta in Weymouth.

Australia's multiple world champion won races nine and 10 to open up a 14-point lead over Cypriot Pavlos Kontides heading into today's medal race at 11pm AEST.

Slingsby has only to finish within six places of Kontides to take the gold.

Regardless of whether he wins or not, Kontides is guaranteed of at least a silver medal and will sail into the history books by claiming the first medal Cyprus has ever won at the Olympics.

Slingsby knows he cannot rule out Kontides, who has been his key opponent throughout the regatta.

"He (Kontides) is sailing really well," Slingsby said. "I tried to get away from him, but he is good at comebacks."
Slingsby is not the only Aussie in the medal hunt.

Malcolm Page and Matthew Belcher head the standings in the men's 470 class after claiming victory in races five and six are four points clear of their nearest rivals, while Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen are fourth overall in the 49er class.
