AUTUMN has to be up there with one of the best seasons of the year.

It's not too hot or too cold to be stuck indoors, the fashion is fantastic, nature turns the beauty-factor up a notch as trees start to take on red and orange foliage making it the perfect time to be outdoors exploring nature, and there's stacks on the social calendar too. Especially if you're heading to Brisbane…

We've got just one month left to enjoy Autumn before winter kicks in, so put these top things to do in Brisbane this season on your to-do list and get yourself to the capital.

Brisbane Racing Carnival, May 13 - June 10: Have your form guide at the ready and hit the track as Brisbane hosts its annual Channel Seven Racing Carnival celebrating the state's best food, fashion, racing and entertainment. This is Group 1 racing at its finest - get your backside trackside!

Explore Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe, May 27: Following Marvel heroes from comic book page to the cinema screen, this much-anticipated ticketed exhibition is coming to the Gallery of Modern Art late May featuring original artwork, film props, costumes and more.  It will give significant focus to the Marvel comic artists, and the development teams who translate the drawn narrative to the screen through production design and storyboarding, costume and prop design, special effects and post-production.

Straddie Salute Triathlon Festival, May 20-21: Held on the picturesque North Stradbroke Island, Straddie Salute is gaining a reputation as one of Queensland's emerging destination triathlons. The weekend features five events from kids to adults.

Try the new Gelato Messina in South Brisbane: What's better than having refreshing ice cream in summer? Having it in Autumn when you don't have to devour it in three seconds before it melts! Across 200sqm of floor space you'll find three counters filled with 40 flavours of colourful gelato (including five rotating weekly specials), timber shelving filled with its signature gelato cakes, and a classroom off to one side. Our pick from the standard 35 flavours? Well, we're yet to try them all but the salted caramel and coffee is a winner, the macadamia crunch is something else, and the salted coconut sorbet with mango salsa is surprisingly rich and hits the spot.

NRL Double Header, May 13: Double footy, double the fun. Get yourself to Brisbane for this ripper Double Header on May 13. Suncorp Stadium will host the Brisbane Broncos up against the Manly Sea Eagles and the Gold Coast Titans versus the Melbourne Storm.

Head for the hills: Getting immersed in the outdoors this time of year should be top priority. Check out these mountains to climb near Brisbane for a seriously good dose of Mother Nature.
