USED to playing at large venues and to full houses all over the world, Wendy Matthews is treating Gympie audiences once more by performing at the Gympie RSL this weekend.
Matthews had such a great time touring the Queensland Coast in June last year she decided to hit the northern road once again, her management company AAA Entertainment said.
The seven-time Aria Award winning singer/songwriter embarked on this new tour putting her own spin on a set of classics from one of the world’s greatest blues singers – Billie Holiday.
Gympie audiences can expect her to crack out her catalogue of greatest hits and some rare gems not heard from her in a long time.
This ‘Holiday’ tour is right on the back of 18 of Matthews’ busiest months – following the release of a new CD ‘SHE’ from her own label Barking Bear Records.
But AAA Entertainment said 2010 promised to be one of Wendy’s finest years yet.
Matthews told The Gympie Times recently she was looking forward to coming back and performing in front of a Gympie audience again.
“I like that part of the world,” she said.
“I always enjoy live performing.
“I’ve known the guys who play with me for many years so it’s fun and familiar.
“We are a trio – guitar and piano with some percussion.
“The first set is a selection of Billie Holiday songs I love, and the second half of the show is my own ‘hit’ favourites.”
Matthews said she liked the fans who came to watch her in Gympie last year.
“I find regional crowds very appreciative and Gympie in particular, perhaps because of the annual muster, but they know their music.”
She said the sit-down format at the Gympie RSL suited her.
“I usually have a sit-down audience.
“Not being a rock or dance singer, I find it a lot more comfortable for everyone.
“That way you’ve got the option of getting up and moving your body to the rhythm if you feel so inclined, or sit back and listen in comfort.”
Matthews’ voice has been described as sublime and expressive and never failing to move those who hear it, so if you haven’t seen her in concert you are missing one of the country’s best performers.
