Shocking discovery of shotgun near Warwick park
AN OFF-DUTY police officer was riding his bike along Dragon St when he made a disturbing discovery.
Wrapped inside a singlet on the side of the road was a double barrel shotgun, which was unregistered and appeared to have been shortened.
Detective Sergeant Darren Tamblyn, of the Warwick Criminal Investigation Branch, said it seemed as though the firearm had fallen off the back of a ute near Bracker Rd.
"It's ridiculous, kids walking to school could have found it," he said.
"People walk dogs there's a park at the end (of the road)."
"It's lucky it fell into the hands of an off-duty police officer and no one else."
Thankfully the firearm was not loaded when it was discovered at 10.30am last Thursday.
"It's not dangerous the way it is but if it was loaded it would have been a lot more dangerous," Sgt Tamblyn said.
"It's a very unusual occurrence, to find a gun lying on the side of the road, especially at that hour of the morning."
Sgt Tamblyn said it was suspected the gun had been there no longer than overnight.
Police are appealing for anyone with information is urged to phone Crime Stoppers on 1300333000.
