Shocked to make Qld side

JESSICA Hurrell's hard work and extra training certainly paid dividends when she was selected for the Queensland Open Girls Hockey side.

The Wide Bay rep said even though she had been training extra hard to perform well at Wide Bay, she was shocked to hear her name called out as part of the new Queensland team earlier this week.

She said her goal this year was to be selected in the Wide Bay side.

"I wasn't expecting to make the Queensland team," Hurrell said.

The 16-year-old said she's even started training with the boys' teams to challenge herself and improve her skills.

"I've been training almost every day," she said.

She said the competition at Wide Bay was challenging, but exactly what she was looking for.

"I really enjoyed the great hockey," Hurrell said.

Hurrell will travel to New Zealand to in October to represent Queensland.
