BANGALOW photographer Richard Windeyer has claimed four silver medals with his first landscape entries in the prestigious Australian Institute of Professional Photography Queensland Awards.

Mr Windeyer, who traditionally specialises in wedding and family portrait photography, only got serious about landscape photography in October while travelling in North America.

"I was trying a few different artistic things, stuff I would never do as a commercial job," he said.

"But a lot of my wedding portraits are people in landscapes so I guess it's a really similar thing, I just don't have the bride and groom in the shot."

Mr Windeyer said travelling abroad had provided him with a fresh perspective and inspired the award-winning landscape shots.

"I think just travelling helps," he said.

"I find it easier to take a good landscape when I'm not in my own backyard because everything's fresh and exciting and new.

"This was my very first time entering this category and I couldn't be happier with the result."

Before establishing himself as a professional photographer, Mr Windeyer travelled throughout Australia and South East Asia demonstrating design and photo-editing skills for photographers.

Six years ago he and his wife Michelle established their business Richard Windeyer Photography in Bangalow.

Mr Windeyer said the key to taking a good wedding photo was getting to know the bride and groom before the big day.

"That way they don't have a stranger showing up on their wedding day to take photos," he said.

"I think people relax more and you have the opportunity to capture intimate moments."

The AIPP is a membership organisation for professional photographers and video producers.
