Shelter helps find the animal of your dreams
IF YOU'RE single this Valentine's Day and looking for a lovable companion to share your life with, why not consider adopting a dog or cat?
Animal Welfare League of Queensland Ipswich staff will play Cupid on Thursday, by matching prospective owners with compatible pets.
The shelter will also offer a 20% discount on all adult cats and dogs adopted by singles on the day.
AWLQ spokeswoman Brooke Whitney said the drive was a "tongue-in-cheek way" of promoting rehoming of animals waiting for a second chance.
Ms Whitney said pets were there for their owners "no matter what".
"The shelter will undergo a 'love' overhaul. Our aim is to make it the most romantic and happy place to be this Valentine's Day," she said.
Rehoming staff will be happy to play Cupid, Ms Whitney said.
"If you are not sure what sort of a pet you are after you can list the qualities you find attractive in a companion and the rehoming staff will do the rest," she said.
Ms Whitney said the special offer would also free up space in the centre for more animals, particularly kittens.
"The cat enclosures are packed to the rafters. It is always a busy time of year with un-desexed cats breeding due to warmer weather," she said.
"We hope this campaign will help create some space in the kennels and enclosures."
AWLQ Ipswich will open from 10am on Thursday and is at 6 Hooper St, West Ipswich.
Dixie the cat, pictured on our front page, is one of the animals available for adoption, and her price will go down from $100 to $80 on Valentine's Day. View other AWLQ Ipswich animals at awlqld.com.au/adopt-a-pet.
