A TOOWOOMBA fishmonger has withdrawn the sale of shark fins after receiving a number of complaints.

In Saturday's edition of The Chronicle, Robert Stone of Stoney the Fishmonger revealed he was selling the delicacy.

Mr Stone sourced the fins from coastal fisherman who removed the fins on shore after the sharks were caught to comply with Australian law.

We wholeheartedly congratulate and thank Robert Stone on his decision to go shark-fin free.

But after receiving a number of complaints from across the nation, Mr Stone decided to stop selling the items.

"Upon advising our supporters of Stoney's decision, a wave of anti-shark fin sentiment was directed to him," Mick Dowers from the Australia Anti-Shark Finning Alliance said.

"We are very pleased and encouraged to see Stoney take the time to respond to our concerns and make the important decision to go shark-fin free.

"We believe this demonstrates the real Aussie business spirit of listening to customers and managing your behaviour in response to those concerns.

"We wholeheartedly congratulate and thank Robert Stone on his decision to go shark-fin free."

In other countries, fins are "harvested" from live sharks.

Mr Stone decline the opportunity to comment further.
