Separate controlled burns cause concern in Gympie residents

A SMOKE haze around Gympie CBD this afternoon was most likely the result of a controlled burn east of Tiaro.

Regional director of the Rural Fire Brigade, Brian Dale said that the strong northerly winds could easily carry the smoke as far south as the Gympie business district from the burn site near Tiaro.

Chatter on facebook had residents in East Deep Creek, Wolvi, Veteran and Cedar Pocket nervous of a smoke haze in that area after the recent heat wave.

A spokesperson at the Gympie Fire Station said there were a number of permitted burns occurring in the area in preparation for the fire season.

He named Goomboorian, Wilson's Pocket and Wolvi as recent burn sites.
