SCHOOL CLOSURES: Byfield State School closed due to flooding

UPDATE THURSDAY 8AM: SOME students will return to school across the region today with flood water having receded overnight.

Farnborough State School, Byfield State School, Ridgelands State School and Yarwun State School were all closed yesterday due to flash flooding.

Farnborough State School this morning advised via Facebook that the school was open again today and it is understood students at both Yarwun and Ridgelands will also return to the classroom today.

The 35 students from Byfield State School are not so lucky with the Cap Coast school still listed as closed due to a 'flooding event' on the Department of Education and Training emergency closed facilities list.

UPDATE: 9.57AM:

ANOTHER STATE school has been added to a growing list of school closures today.

Ridgelands State School has been shut down as roads go under water.

More than 43 Central Queensland roads have gone under water, including 13 in the Rockhampton region.

Schools that have currently declared emergency closures include:

  • Yarwun State School
  • Byfield State School
  • Farnborough State School

EARLIER:

TODAY'S deluge has forced the Farnborough State School to close their doors.

The school posted a notice to Facebook stating "SCHOOL is now closed for today due to road flooding".

Principal Carol Butler spoke with ABC Capricornia about the closure earlier this morning.

"It's just not safe to get here is why we have made the decision to close the school," she said.

"Just today, we are hoping it will be business as usual tomorrow."

FULL FLOOD WEATHER COVERAGE:

An employee of Tarangba State School said some teachers from Woodbury way were not able to come into school today, they had called in replacements.

She said the rain had slowed off, but there was still a lot of water in the area.

They expect some parents would choose to keep their kids at home today.

The Department of Education and Training have advised the Byfield State School and the Yarwin State School have also closed today.
