Sauer trophy to rightful home
WINNING the Gympie junior cricket trophy named in her father’s honour was a big thrill for Donna Mitchell on Saturday.
The Trevor Sauer Memorial Trophy is awarded to the person or family that have volunteered their services above and beyond the call of duty.
Donna yesterday said winning the award meant a lot to her and her family, husband Paul and sons Brycen and Hayden.
“It started as a volunteer’s award, but Dad won it on the night he passed away three years ago, so they decided to name it in his honour,” Donna said.
“It is very special to see the Mitchell family name on my father’s trophy.
“Paul, the boys and I don’t do what we do to get accolades, we do it for the joy of it.
“I am the treasurer and canteen convenor, Paul has coached teams for years and the boys are always helping out. We really enjoy it.”
An extra special touch was the fact the award was handed over to the Mitchells by Julie Sauer, Donna’s mother.
“I think Mum was quite proud,” Donna said.
“It probably would have been emotional for her as well, as it is each year.”
The trophy was awarded on Saturday at the Gympie junior cricket presentations.
