Salt has Colleen breathing easy

TOOWOOMBA nurse Colleen Chant was diagnosed with emphysema 2 months ago and after using numerous drugs and treatments, found relief in the most humble of ingredients – salt.

Since beginning salt cave treatments two weeks ago, Mrs Chant has not had to use her nebulizer once and work colleagues have noticed the dramatic improvement in her overall well-being.

The new form of therapy was launched on June 16 at Toowoomba Salt Caves and has already created a following of people looking for a drug-free alternative for their respiratory problems and skin ailments.

The temperature regulated cave, or Halochamber, is made up of more than 14 tonnes of Himalayan salt crystals – the worlds purest form of salt.

Salt crystals are ground into an aerosol salt vapour which is dispersed throughout the room and inhaled by customers.

Mrs Chant said her doctors are still undecided about the treatment but cannot argue with the noticeable improvement in her health.

“I was on a nebulizer, inhalers and all kinds of antibiotics to help my breathing,” she said.

“As soon as I started coming here I haven’t had to use my inhalers or nebulizer and people at work have noticed how much less I have been coughing.”

The Toowoomba caves are the third to open in Australia with the other two in Melbourne and Sydney.

Toowoomba owner Shaun Taylor came across the salt cave therapy while on visiting his wife's family in Poland.

"Doctors had been doing tests on the salt miners in Poland," he said.

"Most of them smoked and drank a lot but were in great health.

"It turned out that working in the mines and inhaling the salt was doing wonders for their lungs and overall well-being."

The Toowoomba Salt Caves are located at the Red Edge Shopping Centre, 192 James St, Toowoomba.
