Sad times as local firm closes

IT'S never nice to see a local company or business close shop; it's even worse when that company has been a part of the fabric of Gympie for more than 100 years and has employed so many people.

Trailer manufacturer J Smith & Sons has been one of the region's most enduring companies; only The Gympie Times can say it has served the region longer.

The company has long been a champion of the community, sponsoring events and playing its part in promoting Gympie as a great place to live and work.

Losing J Smith & Sons will leave a huge hole the region's economy.

It's sad to see the company go but even sadder to know that 67 families in the region have an uncertain Christmas.

Most workers have mortgages to pay, cars to pay off and the usual daily bills. Let's hope they all get jobs quickly.
