Runners ready for Gympie Gallop

SPRINTERS throw on the running spikes in the mad dash for cash tomorrow at the One Mile Ovals during the 2010 Gympie Gallop.

It’s the first time Gympie is hosting the running event, billed as Wide Bay’s premier 100 metre sprint event.

Football Gympie’s Under 12 and 13 Development Carnival will stop for the event, with a makeshift 100 metre running track pegged out on the soccer oval.

Strictly for boys only this year, with girls’ racing in the pipeline for next year, age groups involved include Juniors (12-15 years) in addition to Intermediate (16-18 years) and Open Men.

The prize money on offer will have many stretching and preparing for a burst of speed to boost their spending money. Prize money is as follows:

First place Juniors – $150, First place Intermediate – $250, First place Open Men – $500.

Football Gympie secretary Pam Tindall said she was excited ahead of the event.

“We’ve never had this event here before, so it will be interesting and a lot of fun as well,” she said.

The 12 and 13 years age groups will have heats before semi finals and a final, while the 14 and 15 years, and the open men, will be just finals.
