Rug up for winter cold snap
A SIGNIFICANT wind chill factor dropped temperatures dramatically in Gympie yesterday, but the cool breeze dropped off as suddenly as it picked up.
The mercury continued to dip overnight with a minimum temperature of 5 degrees. The cold is expected to continue with 3 degrees this morning, with frosts adding an extra chill to the air.
While it is nowhere near Gympie's coldest temperature on record for the month of July - with minus 4.3 degrees recorded on July 20, 2007 - temperatures are expected to continue to drop below the monthly average of 6 degrees.
The chilly nights are due to a cold air mass in the wake of a front that was expected to arrive last night. The cold air mass will combine with light south-westerly winds and clear skies, to produce very chilly nights. Most of the state will experience cold nights as the air mass spreads as far north as Townsville.
Good news for State Of Origin fans - it's not looking too chilly or breezy and there's almost no chance of rain.
