Ronaldo treble sinks city rivals on keeps Real on top

FOOTBALL: Cristiano Ronaldo has netted his 39th career hat-trick, giving his Real Madrid a 3-0 win over city rivals Atletico to increase its lead at the top of La Liga.

The Portugal forward opened the scoring with a deflected free-kick.

Ronaldo added a second from the penalty spot before he completed his treble when he tapped in a cross from Gareth Bale.

The 31-year-old has scored eight La Liga goals for the European champions this season, to draw level with Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

His total could have been more had Atletico keeper Jan Oblak not produced a stunning diving save to keep out Ronaldo's powerful header when the game was goalless.

The result was also a blow to Atletico's title hopes with Diego Simeone's side nine points behind Real.

Real now has a four-point lead over second-placed Barcelona, which was held to a goalless draw by Malaga.
