Brisbane Roar student Jamie Young shines in defeat

ROAR goalkeeper Jamie Young impressed in front of his former mentor Brendan Rodgers as Brisbane pushed its higher-fancied opponents Liverpool all the way, losing 2-1 at Suncorp Stadium.

Young, who was once a protege of Liverpool manager Rodgers when in the Reading youth system, produced some outstanding saves before a near capacity pro-Liverpool crowd.

His first came in the 22nd minute, producing a diving save to deny Reds recruit Danny Ings in front of goal. And minutes before half-time, it was Young who denied a close-range Mamadou Sakho header to keep the score locked 1-1.

The Roar enjoyed a shock lead in the 17th minute after a Brandon Borrello cut back was smashed home by Dimitri Petratos.

Adam Lallana replied 11 minutes later with a top goal, wrong-footing Jack Hingert with a neat step-over and looping shot off a neat James Milner cross.

Roar wonder kid Devante Clut's shot flew over the crossbar in the 65th minute, before England international James Milner's nutmeg move on Jade North sealed the win.

Liverpool 2 (A Lallana 28, J Milner 75) d Brisbane Roar 1 (D Petratos 17). At Suncorp Stadium Friday night.
