Roads on top of wishlists

GYMPIE Mayor Ron Dyne has called on tonight's Federal Budget to fund more quality infrastructure in regional Australia and finish the Cooroy to Curra bypass of Gympie.

Treasurer Wayne Swan will hand down his sixth Federal Budget in Canberra tonight, delivering a $637 million upgrade to the Bruce Hwy.

Completing the bypass should be high on the Budget's list of priorities, Cr Dyne said. Allocating more money to the post-flood betterment funding was his other big priority.

Gympie has applied for $28 million in betterment funding.

To the south of Gympie, Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson wants to see guaranteed funding for the upgrade of the Bruce Hwy between Caloundra Rd and the Sunshine Mwy, and a plan and timetable for the Caboolture to Caloundra stretch of the highway.

"This may be an election year but it's not the time for an election budget - it should be about investing in the future of this country, not buying votes in September," Cr Jamieson said.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland Sunshine Coast Regional Policy Chair Steve Dittman said there were a handful of key infrastructure projects local chambers were lobbying the government for - the most important being the Bruce Hwy.
