RME Downlands Art Exhibition – Feature Artist, Diana Battle

The 2019 RME Downlands Art Exhibition promises to be extraordinary! Coinciding with the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers and part of the Carnival’s official program, Downlands has also entered its magnificent grounds into the world class Garden competition and this, along with our Art Cafe are open to the public during Carnival week.

Visionary curator, Evan Hollis, has ensured an exceptionally high standard of diverse and accomplished works that will delight and excite investors and art lovers!

Some of the biggest names in Australian art will be on show, including Pro Hart, Norman Lindsay, Michael Challen, Hugh Sawrey and Greg Postle through to the more modern John Perceval, Tim Storrier, Geoffrey Proud, Rex Backhaus-Smith and many other significant artists.

The 2019 feature artist, Diana Battle has a strong connection with Toowoomba and with Downlands through her children and grandchildren attending the College. Diana’s paintings incorporate elements of colour and shape, light and shade to create strong feelings and impressions of intrigue and discovery. Her works are highly sought after in galleries from Buderim to Brisbane.

When asked to describe her style of painting Diana says, “I put this under a large umbrella of expressionistic/ impressionistic/abstracted. I enjoy the intuitive approach to painting and then it is often just a mark or shape on the canvas which will trigger a memory and from there the work comes to a resolve. I use colour and shapes to invite the viewer into the painting to create their own narrative - this then makes the story in the painting their own and often a surprise or two can be found along the way. The idea of this interaction is exciting to me and I am often amazed by another person’s perspective. There is a strong correlation between my life and the paintings I make which include favourite areas in Toowoomba and places I have visited during the past year.”

The Gala Opening commences at 7pm on Friday 20 September. Most art lovers know that many gallery and exhibition pieces are snapped up at the Gala Opening. Limited tickets provide an exclusive preview of all artworks and a fabulous night of art, food, fun and friends. Gala tickets also allow entry into the exhibition as many times as you wish over the eight day period at no extra charge.

The Exhibition is open to the public 10am - 4pm from 21 to 28 September. Admission is $7.50 and $5 for concession with school students free. Coffee and refreshments will be available at the Downlands Art Café from 10am – 3pm.
