A RISKY overtaking manoeuvre at Barker Creek Flat came close to causing a crash that could have ended in tragedy.

A Subaru wagon, overtaking a row of traffic as it travelled west on the D'Aguilar Hwy between Nanango and Kingaroy, squeezed back into the west-bound lane metres in front of an oncoming four-wheel drive.

Senior Sergeant Duane Frank said at the time the driver of the four-wheel drive could only reasonably believe he was going to be involved in a head-on crash.

"Both the vehicles were travelling at speed," he said.

"If the vehicles collided there was a huge possibility someone could have died."

The risky pass was captured on video from a dash-cam mounted in the four-wheel drive.
